The Institute for Judaism, Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity is driven by Jewish religious values and the spiritual quest for holiness. With this foundation, and the knowledge that we are b'tzelem elohim, created in the image of God, we believe that these values call us to achieve complete inclusion, integration and equal standing of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in our congregations and communities.

The Institute's projects include:
  • Consulting on inclusion to Jewish Communal organizations
  • Sponsoring internships in LGBT synagogues
  • Producing a quarterly interfaith discussion series, Out and Faithful: LGBT People, Faith and Religion with the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center
  • Co-editing with the Department of Family Concerns (URJ) the revision of a book called Kulanu: An LGBT Inclusion Guide for Congregations (for information, visit
  • Conducting research about welcoming practices in synagogues across the country with Jewish Mosaic and Synagogue 3000, with the support of Dr. Steven Cohen.

Call For Pride Month Events & Sermons
Pride Month is upon us. We at the Institute for Judaism, Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity are interested in knowing about the many events and sermons you may be planning to celebrate. Please send us publicity for events or sermons you do during Pride Month. Check out the Liturgy & Ritual Section's "Prayers/Readings for Services and Holidays" for ideas. Consider this with your aliyot for Pride Shabbat.

In 2008, JQ International and IJSO collaborated to develop this wonderful Seder, which is a comprehensively GLBT-oriented Haggadah and GLBT Passover experience that attempts to bridge traditional and modern, old and new, historical and contemporary. Consider adapting this Haggadah for a Pride Seder.
