Resource type Article
Description/Summary This article tackles the religious transformation that can occur when religious Jews transition their gender. The article describes the way in which gender transition often results in a positive change in the relationship to Judaism as well as exploring family issues that transgender people pose to Judaism such as the case of an FTM (Female to Male) and an MTF (Male to Female) having a baby and who is considered the mother. The people in the article represent a range of gender identities and levels of Jewish practice.
Excerpt “There are other ways that Judaism can help people seeking alternative ways of viewing their gender identity. ‘Did you know that there are seven genders mentioned in the Talmud?’ asks S. Bear Bergman . . . The Talmud includes guidelines on incorporating different genders and sexes into Jewish Society. Even if those multi-gendered guidelines aren’t followed today, they set a precedent for accepting non-binary genders in Jewish life.”
Additional notes Charlie Anders, the author of this article, has written a book “Choir Boy” which deals with a teenage boy and the intersections of religion and gender.
